Drywall Repair
Stop the cracks at the source, not the surface.
Drywall cracks are the most-visible symptom most homeowners notice — but they're almost always a downstream effect of something happening below grade. At We Fix Cracks we don't just patch the visible crack and walk away; we trace it back to the underlying cause (foundation settlement, structural movement, moisture infiltration, or sometimes just bad original install) and fix both. That's why our drywall repairs in Fairfield County, CT and Westchester County, NY hold through multiple freeze-thaw cycles instead of reopening after the first paint job.

- Free on-site inspection within 48 hours
- Root-cause diagnosis, not patch work
- Lifetime warranty on qualifying structural repairs

Why this is happening.
Understanding the cause is half the repair. Symptoms come back when root causes aren't addressed.
Foundation Settlement
When the foundation shifts, the framing above moves with it and drywall joints crack first — the weakest link in the load path.
Seasonal Movement
Drywall expands and contracts with humidity. In CT and NY freeze-thaw cycles, poorly installed joint tape or undersized joints crack predictably every spring.
Water Damage
Roof leaks, plumbing leaks, or basement moisture migrating up through the wall cavity weakens drywall and softens joint compound. The crack is the easiest place for it to show.
Original Install Quality
Tape laid too dry, joint compound applied too thick, drywall hung without proper backing — these failures show up years later as recurring cracks no amount of patching will solve.
How we fix it, right.
We match the method to the damage, not the other way around. No one-size-fits-all.
Diagnose the Cause First
We open a small inspection panel near the crack, check for moisture, look at the framing behind it, and trace the line back to the foundation or roof. No cause = no permanent fix.
Crack Repair with Mesh Tape
For cracks driven by settlement that has stabilized, we tape over with self-adhesive fiberglass mesh, embed in joint compound, feather out, and sand to a finished surface ready for primer.
Cut-Out & Patch
For larger cracks, water damage, or active movement zones, we cut out the affected drywall section, install new drywall to the framing, tape the new joints, and finish to match the surrounding wall texture.
Texture & Color Match
Smooth, knockdown, orange peel, or skip trowel — we match the existing texture so the repair disappears once paint goes on. Color matching available if you don't want to repaint the whole wall.
Address the Underlying Cause
When the crack traces back to a foundation issue, we recommend the structural fix as part of the same scope. Repeating drywall repair every 2 years is more expensive than fixing the foundation once.
Manufacturer-grade. Brand-named.
We don't use hardware-store filler. Every product below is sourced from manufacturers that don't sell to DIYers, and we're trained directly with most of them.
Self-adhesive fiberglass mesh tape
Stronger and easier to feather than paper tape. Used for crack repairs where the underlying movement has stabilized.
Lightweight joint compound
Multi-coat application with proper drying time between coats. We don't rush dry time — that's how amateur drywall jobs fail within a year.
Drywall sheets
Standard 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch sheets depending on wall application, sourced locally and matched to the existing drywall thickness.
Texture matching tools
Knockdown knives, orange peel hoppers, and skip trowel knives — whatever texture your wall has, we match it. Smooth walls are easiest; textured walls take more skill.
Primer + paint
Stain-blocking primer on water-damaged areas. Color-matched paint when only the repaired section needs touch-up.
From your call to the warranty document.
Honest day-by-day expectations. No mystery scheduling, no "we'll be there next week" that turns into next month.
Inspection + diagnosis
Free on-site visit. We open a small inspection panel near the crack, check for moisture, and trace the underlying cause. Written quote with the actual scope — drywall only vs. drywall + foundation.
Prep + containment
Floor protection, plastic sheeting on adjacent furniture, dust containment around the work area. We protect your finished spaces before any cutting starts.
Repair
Crack patching with mesh tape and joint compound, or cut-out and replacement for larger damage. Joint compound applied in 2-3 coats with drying time between each.
Sand + texture + finish
Final sanding to a smooth finish, texture match (smooth, knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel), primer on the repaired section. Surface ready for paint.
Paint + walkthrough
Color-matched paint applied if requested, walkthrough with you, signed workmanship warranty document. Clean-up complete, no dust or debris left behind.
Real pricing for drywall repair in CT & NY.
Single recurring crack repair with diagnosis, mesh-tape patch, finish, and texture match on one wall. Most common drywall scope we quote in CT and NY.
Three factors do the heavy lifting.
Number of cracks + length
One small vertical crack runs $250-$500. Multi-room recurring cracks or long stair-step cracks across multiple walls run $1,500-$3,500. Linear feet is the main driver.
Cause: cosmetic vs structural
If the underlying cause is foundation settlement, the drywall repair is the easy part — the foundation repair is the real scope. We quote both honestly so you can decide whether to fix the source or just the symptom.
Texture and paint match
Smooth-finish walls cost less to blend. Knockdown, orange peel, or skip trowel textures add labor. Paint matching the existing color is extra; full-wall repaint sometimes makes more sense and we'll tell you which is cheaper.
Diagnostic drywall repair vs. just patching the crack
Side-by-side, what changes when the repair is done right.
Every building type.
From a single-family hairline crack to municipal-scale structural work.
Residential
Single-family homes with recurring drywall cracks, settlement-driven wall damage, or water damage from upstairs leaks. Most common job type.
Pre-Sale Repair
Homeowners getting a property ready for listing or closing. Documented repair with photos and a written warranty puts inspector concerns to rest.
Post-Settlement
Homes where the foundation has finished settling and now the drywall needs a one-time correction. We confirm movement has stopped before doing the patch.
Commercial / Office
Retail and office walls with recurring corner cracks, water-damaged sections, or wear from heavy traffic. Scheduled after-hours so business doesn't stop.
Healthcare & Institutional
Smooth, sanitary finishes with low-dust prep. Cracks and damage repaired without spreading particulate into adjacent spaces.
Start with a self-check.
Tap the crack types below to understand what's happening with yours. Then send us a photo, we'll confirm and quote.
Inner Corner Crack
Crack at the inside corner where two foundation walls meet. The most critical pattern, almost always structural.

We don't patch. We fix permanently.
Every structural repair restores the section with a stronger, more sustainable material than what originally failed. If a crack is identified as structural, the only honest fix is to rebuild that section with a superior material, since the original already failed once. That's not an upsell, it's the rule that keeps a lifetime warranty real.
Drywall Repair, answered.
The questions homeowners actually ask us when drywall repair comes up at the inspection.
How much does drywall repair cost in CT and NY?
Typical single recurring crack runs $250-$750 depending on length and finish. Multi-room repairs or stair-step cracks across multiple walls run $1,500-$3,500. Full-room re-drywall jobs (water damage rebuild) run higher. The biggest cost driver is whether the underlying cause is foundation settlement (in which case the drywall is the easy part of the scope).
Why do my drywall cracks keep coming back even after patching?
Because the wall is still moving. Joint compound and paint are passive materials — they don't stop movement, they just hide it. If the foundation is settling, the framing is shifting, or moisture is migrating, drywall will crack again at the same spot every freeze-thaw cycle. The permanent fix addresses both the surface AND the cause.
Can you match my wall texture?
Yes — smooth, knockdown, orange peel, and skip trowel textures are all standard matches we do. Older homes with custom or hand-applied textures take more time but we can replicate most. The match is invisible under normal lighting; only raked side-light might reveal a slight difference on very old textures.
Do you paint after the repair, or just leave it primed?
Both options. We can prime only (you do the paint), or we can color-match and paint just the repaired section, or we can paint the whole wall corner-to-corner. We'll tell you honestly which option will give the cleanest visual result — sometimes full-wall repaint is the same price as a careful spot match.
How long does the repair take?
Most single-crack repairs are 2-3 days on-site total: Day 1 prep + first coat, Day 2 sand + second coat + texture, Day 3 final sand + primer + paint. We don't rush the drying time between joint compound coats — that's the #1 reason amateur drywall fails within a year.
Do I need to move out during the repair?
No. We use floor protection, plastic sheeting around the work area, and HEPA-filtered dust containment for the sanding stage. You can stay in the home and work from home; we just ask that you stay out of the immediate work area while sanding is happening (one room or hallway at a time).
What if my cracks are caused by foundation settlement?
Then drywall repair alone is treating the symptom, not the cause. We'll trace the crack pattern, classify whether the underlying foundation movement is active or has stabilized, and recommend the right scope. Sometimes the answer is foundation crack repair + drywall repair in one combined scope; sometimes it's just drywall because the foundation is now stable. Honest scoping on both pieces.
Is there a warranty on drywall repair?
Yes — documented workmanship warranty in writing on every job, typically 1-5 years depending on scope and whether the underlying cause was also addressed. Drywall repair doesn't qualify for the lifetime transferable warranty (that's reserved for structural repairs with full-wall carbon fiber reinforcement), but you get a real signed warranty document on every drywall job.
